ABOUT THE WINE

“Les Champs Cloux” is a Premier Cru vineyard in Rully, situated in the northern Côte Chalonnaise, where Pinot Noir thrives on the appellation’s limestone- and clay-rich slopes. Domaine de Villaine’s parcel produces a particularly elegant expression of the variety, emphasizing perfume, freshness, and finely drawn structure rather than sheer power.

The warm and successful 2023 growing season gave the wine excellent fruit maturity while retaining the freshness essential to fine Burgundy. Aromatically, it moves from ripe cherry, raspberry, and red currant into more nuanced notes of violet, dried herbs, gentle spice, and earth. The palate has appealing depth and generosity, but lively acidity keeps the fruit lifted and energetic. Fine, polished tannins provide definition and lead into a persistent finish with savory and mineral undertones.

As throughout the domaine, the vineyard is farmed organically with an emphasis on living soils, naturally balanced vines, and meticulous manual work. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted. Vinification is deliberately gentle, seeking aromatic complexity and structural finesse without excessive extraction, while élevage in wood allows the wine to develop texture and complexity without overwhelming the character of the vineyard.

While its supple fruit makes the 2023 attractive in its youth, Les Champs Cloux has the balance and structure to develop gracefully in bottle. With age, its fresh red-fruit character should evolve toward dried flowers, forest floor, savory spice, and more complex earthy notes. Pair it with roast duck, guinea hen, pork tenderloin, veal, mushroom dishes, lentils, or moderately aged cheeses.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Domaine de Villaine is based in Bouzeron, at the northern end of Burgundy’s Côte Chalonnaise. Aubert and Pamela de Villaine settled there in the early 1970s and became important advocates for the region, particularly for Bouzeron and its historic vineyards of Aligoté Doré. Over time, the domaine expanded its work into neighboring appellations, including distinguished Chardonnay and Pinot Noir sites in Rully.

Today, the estate is directed by Pierre de Benoist, Aubert de Villaine’s nephew. Organic farming is central to the domaine’s philosophy, with close attention paid to soil health, biodiversity, moderate yields, and careful manual vineyard work. In the cellar, intervention remains restrained: gentle vinification and measured élevage are intended to transmit the character of grape variety, vintage, and individual site as clearly as possible.

Although Domaine de Villaine is internationally recognized for its benchmark Bouzeron Aligoté, its Rully Premier Cru wines demonstrate another dimension of the estate’s work. “Les Champs Cloux” exemplifies its approach to Pinot Noir—fragrant and nuanced, with fine structure, freshness, and a distinctly Burgundian preference for elegance and terroir expression over weight or extraction.
