2023 Domaine A.F. Gros Moulin-à-Vent "En Mortperay", Beaujolais, France

A standout expression of Moulin-à-Vent, the 2023 “En Mortperay” from Domaine A.F. Gros bridges the finesse of Burgundy with the power of Beaujolais. Aromas of ripe black cherry, crushed violets, and wild herbs lead into a palate that’s both generous and sculpted, with a firm mineral spine, silky tannins, and a long, savory finish tinged with graphite and peppered spice. It’s a Gamay of uncommon depth and elegance, unmistakably shaped by its noble Burgundian touch.

ABOUT THIS WINE

Sourced from the granitic slopes of the “En Mortperay” lieu-dit, situated on the northern edge of Moulin-à-Vent, this wine benefits from shallow, pink granite soils with quartz and manganese—ideal for Gamay with structure and longevity. In 2023, optimal harvest conditions allowed for precise ripeness and natural balance. The fruit was partially destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts, then aged in a combination of stainless steel and neutral Burgundian oak barrels for 12 months to preserve energy and subtlety.

The wine is layered and focused: floral, dark-fruited, and texturally refined. While approachable in its youth, it holds the tension and backbone for graceful development over the next 5–10 years. Ideal alongside roasted duck, lentils with wild mushrooms, or aged Tomme de Savoie.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine A.F. Gros is a prestigious name rooted in Vosne-Romanée, where Anne-Françoise Gros carries forward the legacy of the Gros family—one of Burgundy’s most respected dynasties. While the domaine is primarily known for its refined Pinot Noirs from the Côte d'Or, A.F. Gros extended her vision southward to Beaujolais, bringing a Burgundian sensibility to the terroirs of Moulin-à-Vent.

Farming is done sustainably with an emphasis on soil vitality and low yields, and winemaking is precise yet non-intrusive. The Beaujolais wines, particularly those from “En Mortperay,” reflect this cross-regional mastery—combining Gamay’s innate charm with the structure and elegance traditionally associated with Burgundy.
