2023 Domaine du Pélican "Beranger" Trousseau, Jura, France

Refined yet vibrant, the 2023 Béranger Trousseau from Domaine du Pélican captures the Jura’s signature red with exceptional clarity and finesse. Aromas of wild raspberry, rose hips, and white pepper rise from the glass, followed by a palate that’s energetic and transparent. Silky tannins, juicy acidity, and a whisper of earth and spice frame the wine’s lithe, mineral-driven structure. A delicate yet soulful expression of Trousseau at its most elegant.

ABOUT THIS WINE

Béranger is a single-vineyard Trousseau sourced from Domaine du Pélican’s organically and biodynamically farmed parcel in Montigny-lès-Arsures—the Jura village widely regarded as Trousseau’s historical stronghold. The soils here are composed of marl and limestone, perfectly suited to this sensitive, low-yielding grape. In 2023, cooler conditions preserved the grape’s hallmark freshness and aromatic lift.

The fruit is hand-harvested, with partial whole-cluster fermentation using indigenous yeasts. Vinification is gentle to maintain Trousseau’s light body and aromatic clarity. The wine is then aged for several months in neutral oak barrels and large foudres to integrate without adding weight. Aromatically, it leans into red fruits, crushed herbs, and subtle spice; on the palate, it is supple and bright, with a core of vibrant acidity and a long, mineral-inflected finish. Best enjoyed slightly chilled, this wine pairs beautifully with roast poultry, grilled trout, herbed sausages, or Jura cheeses like Morbier and Tomme.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine du Pélican was founded in 2012 by Guillaume d’Angerville, renowned proprietor of Burgundy’s Domaine Marquis d’Angerville, who recognized the Jura’s immense potential for site-expressive wines. Working alongside François Duvivier, the team built the estate from the ground up, acquiring prime parcels around Arbois and converting them immediately to certified organic and biodynamic farming.

From Chardonnay and Savagnin to Poulsard and Trousseau, Pélican’s wines reflect a precise, restrained aesthetic influenced by Burgundian craftsmanship but deeply rooted in Jura identity. The domaine avoids excessive extraction and new oak, aiming for purity, transparency, and vibrancy. Béranger Trousseau is a standout example—transforming a sometimes rustic varietal into a fine-tuned, high-toned red that speaks fluently of both grape and place.
