ABOUT THE WINE

Cros Parantoux occupies a privileged position above Richebourg and is widely regarded as a Premier Cru of Grand Cru caliber. Domaine Emmanuel Rouget farms approximately 0.71 hectares here, with old vines dating to the 1950s and 1960s. The east-facing site is characterized by pebbly, clay-and-limestone soils and a relatively cool mesoclimate, helping produce Pinot Noir of concentration, freshness, and pronounced mineral character. Rouget's first vintage from the vineyard under his own label was 1989.

The vineyard is inseparable from the legacy of Henri Jayer, Emmanuel Rouget’s uncle and mentor. Jayer famously reclaimed Cros Parantoux from difficult, rocky ground and established it as one of Vosne-Romanée’s legendary sites. Emmanuel began working with his uncle in 1976 and gradually assumed responsibility for his vineyards, continuing the meticulous approach that made Jayer's wines benchmarks for Burgundy.

The wine is 100% Pinot Noir. In keeping with the domaine’s house style, the fruit is carefully sorted and completely destemmed before undergoing a cold pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation takes place in concrete, with gentle pump-overs favored over more aggressive extraction. Premier Cru wines are typically matured in 100% new oak and bottled without filtration, preserving both texture and the vineyard's distinctive expression. In the vineyards, low yields, organic techniques, plowing, and careful vine management are employed to promote healthy soils and concentrated fruit.

The 2023 is particularly expressive aromatically, showing red cherry, darker berries, rose, citrus peel, subtle licorice and pepper, with stony and flinty nuances beneath the fruit. On the palate, its freshness and mineral tension balance the vintage's ripe fruit, while exceptionally fine tannins provide structure for long aging. Although compelling for its perfume today, this is fundamentally a cellar wine and should become considerably more complex with bottle age.

Pair with roast duck, pigeon, herb-crusted lamb, beef tenderloin, veal with morels, or other dishes incorporating earthy mushrooms and truffles. With maturity, its savory complexity also makes it a superb partner for simply prepared game birds.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Domaine Emmanuel Rouget is one of the most celebrated estates in the Côte de Nuits, its history closely intertwined with that of legendary Vosne-Romanée vigneron Henri Jayer. Emmanuel Rouget began working alongside his uncle in 1976, initially leasing vineyards before gradually taking over Jayer's holdings. He produced his first wines from family vineyards under his own name in the mid-1980s, operating from his winery in Flagey-Echézeaux; by 2001, Jayer's vineyards had been fully transferred to him.

Rouget has preserved many of the techniques that defined Jayer's philosophy: low yields, meticulous sorting, complete destemming, cold maceration, gentle extraction, and an uncompromising focus on pure fruit and terroir expression. Vineyard work emphasizes organic and environmentally sensitive practices, including plowing rather than relying solely on chemical weed control. The cellar philosophy is similarly precise, favoring concrete fermentation, carefully judged new oak, and bottling without filtration.

Today, the next generation is increasingly involved, with Emmanuel's son Guillaume Rouget, who joined the domaine in 2011, playing an important role in carrying the family tradition forward. The estate remains deliberately small and its wines exceptionally scarce. Among its holdings, Cros Parantoux stands as its defining wine—a direct link to Henri Jayer and one of the most singular expressions of Pinot Noir in Burgundy.
