2023 Domaine Etienne Sauzet Saint-Romain “La Perrière”, Burgundy, France
The 2023 La Perrière from Domaine Etienne Sauzet is a vibrant and expressive Chardonnay that highlights the freshness and limestone tension of Saint-Romain’s high-altitude terroir. Aromas of green apple, lemon peel, white flowers, and wet stone leap from the glass, while the palate is precise and linear, with racy acidity, a gentle chalky grip, and a clean, mouthwatering finish. It’s a pure, mineral-driven white Burgundy with impressive poise.

ABOUT THIS WINE
Located high on the slopes west of the Côte de Beaune, La Perrière is a lieu-dit within the cool-climate appellation of Saint-Romain, known for producing taut, mineral Chardonnays. The vineyard’s elevation and limestone-rich soils make it an ideal site for preserving acidity and freshness, even in warmer vintages like 2023.
Grapes were harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and gently pressed. Fermentation occurred with native yeasts in French oak barrels, of which only a small percentage were new to avoid masking the wine’s purity. Aging lasted around 10–12 months, followed by a brief settling in tank to preserve lift and clarity.
This cuvée is all about tension and elegance. Bright citrus, white stone fruit, and crushed rock dominate the profile, with subtle notes of hazelnut and almond emerging with air. The wine’s light body and high energy make it ideal for earlier drinking, though it will hold well for 3–5 years. Serve with fresh seafood, goat cheese, or simply prepared poultry.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Domaine Etienne Sauzet, a benchmark for Puligny-Montrachet, extends its precision and biodynamic farming philosophy beyond the Côte d’Or’s most famous appellations. Under the stewardship of Emilie and Benoît Riffault, the domaine crafts wines that emphasize terroir transparency, elegance, and freshness—whether from Grand Cru holdings or lesser-known villages like Saint-Romain.
Their work in La Perrière reflects the same care and sensitivity applied to their Premier Crus: hand-harvesting, restrained oak, and gentle élevage to let the vineyard speak. While this wine offers a more accessible price point, it bears the same stamp of quality and clarity that defines the Sauzet style.
The 2023 La Perrière is a brilliant expression of cool-climate Burgundy—mineral, zesty, and full of life.
