2023 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge "La Tourtine", Provence, France

The 2023 La Tourtine is a formidable, age-worthy expression of Bandol, showcasing Mourvèdre’s depth and gravitas with remarkable clarity. Intensely aromatic, it opens with brooding notes of black plum, wild thyme, smoked meat, and crushed stone. The palate is dense and tightly wound, revealing layers of dark fruit, iron-rich minerality, and garrigue. Powerful yet composed, its firm tannins and energetic acidity lead into a long, savory finish marked by leather, spice, and sea breeze salinity.

ABOUT THE WINE
From a windswept, south-facing plateau between Castellet and La Cadière, La Tourtine captures the raw power of Bandol’s limestone-clay terroir. Comprising roughly 85% Mourvèdre with Grenache and Cinsault, the 2023 vintage reflects both concentration and restraint—thanks to the vineyard’s sunny exposure tempered by the Mistral winds. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 18–20 months in large old foudres, the wine maintains purity and structure without overt oak influence. It’s a bottling built for the long haul, typically requiring several years to open fully, but offering profound rewards with age. Enjoy with game meats, slow-cooked lamb, or hearty mushroom dishes that match its intensity.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Domaine Tempier is revered as the soul of Bandol, its legacy tightly woven into the region’s post-war revival and international renown. Under the stewardship of the Peyraud family since 1936, the estate has championed Mourvèdre as the noble grape of Provence, shaping the Bandol AOC’s identity in the process. Farming is certified organic, and winemaking is rooted in tradition—minimal intervention, native yeasts, no filtration, and élevage in large old foudres. Tempier’s single-vineyard cuvées—La Tourtine, La Migoua, and Cabassaou—are among the finest terroir-driven wines in southern France, each offering a distinct lens into the region’s rugged terrain and Mediterranean character.
