2023 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge "Lulu & Lucien", Provence, France

The 2023 Lulu & Lucien is the soul of Domaine Tempier—an expressive, savory Bandol Rouge that balances the wildness of Mourvèdre with Mediterranean warmth and finesse. Aromas of black cherry, leather, dried herbs, and crushed violets rise from the glass, while the palate delivers layers of ripe dark fruit, garrigue, and a touch of smoked meat. Structured yet approachable in its youth, it shows fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a persistent, earthy finish touched by spice and mineral grip.

ABOUT THE WINE
Named in tribute to Lucien and Lulu Peyraud—visionaries behind the revival of Bandol and the spiritual heart of Domaine Tempier—Lulu & Lucien is the domaine’s foundational cuvée and a benchmark for Mourvèdre-based reds. The 2023 vintage is composed of approximately 75% Mourvèdre, with Grenache, Cinsault, and a touch of Carignan rounding out the blend. Sourced from a mosaic of organically farmed estate vineyards across Bandol, the wine is fermented with native yeasts and aged in large, old oak foudres for 18 to 20 months. This élevage preserves the purity of fruit and structure of Mourvèdre without masking its inherent rustic elegance. Designed to be enjoyed young with decanting or cellared for 10–15 years, it’s a versatile partner to dishes like grilled lamb, cassoulet, or roasted root vegetables with Provençal herbs.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Domaine Tempier is the emblematic estate of Bandol, with a lineage stretching back to 1834 and a defining legacy shaped by Lucien and Lulu Peyraud in the 20th century. Their tireless advocacy for Mourvèdre and traditional farming was pivotal in establishing Bandol’s AOC status in 1941. Today, the estate remains family-owned and organically farmed, producing wines that honor place, varietal integrity, and generational stewardship. From the foundational Lulu & Lucien cuvée to the iconic single-vineyard bottlings, Tempier's wines are deeply rooted in the limestone hills of Provence and a philosophy that blends precision with rustic charm.
