2023 Domaine Texier Côtes du Rhône "Brézème", Rhone Valley, France

A soulful and vibrant Syrah from one of the Rhône’s most distinctive micro-terroirs, the 2023 “Brézème” offers a lifted, cool-climate expression with wild blackberry, cracked pepper, smoked herbs, and crushed stone. The palate is energetic and nervy, with fine-grained tannins, mouthwatering acidity, and a long, savory finish that hums with mineral tension and garrigue.

ABOUT THE WINE
Domaine Texier’s 2023 “Brézème” is a 100% Syrah sourced from steep, south-facing limestone slopes along the Drôme River in the southernmost part of the northern Rhône. Though legally classified as Côtes du Rhône, Brézème’s terroir and character align more closely with the elegance and structure of Saint-Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage.
The vineyard is certified organic and farmed biodynamically, with deep respect for soil vitality and ecosystem balance. Winemaker Eric Texier employs traditional methods: whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts, long maceration, no destemming, and aging in large, old oak foudres. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, with minimal sulfur, preserving the integrity of place.
The 2023 vintage was shaped by a moderate, balanced growing season with cool nights and well-timed rains, yielding a wine of freshness, energy, and aromatic precision.
Pair with grilled lamb chops, lentil stew, smoked duck, or roasted eggplant with za’atar and tahini.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Eric Texier is a Rhône original — a former nuclear engineer who turned to winemaking in the 1990s with a deep reverence for traditional practices and forgotten terroirs. His work has been pivotal in reviving Brézème and Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban, areas long overlooked but historically celebrated.
At Domaine Texier, all farming is organic and biodynamic, with an emphasis on biodiversity, soil life, and manual labor. In the cellar, the approach is resolutely low-intervention: no additives beyond minimal SO₂, spontaneous fermentations, no new oak, and long élévage. Texier’s wines are known for their clarity, structure, and authenticity — a compelling blend of intellectual rigor and soulful expression.
His commitment to heritage, sustainability, and honesty has made him one of the Rhône’s most respected and quietly radical voices.
