2023 Domaine Zafeirakis Microcosmos Malagousia, Tyrnavos, Greece

A luminous and expressive white, the 2023 Microcosmos Malagousia from Domaine Zafeirakis captures the pure essence of this aromatic Greek variety. Crisp and vibrant, it opens with heady notes of white peach, bergamot, jasmine, and lemon verbena. The palate is textured yet agile, with a silken midweight feel, juicy citrus-driven acidity, and a clean, mineral-laced finish that lingers with hints of saline and orchard blossom.

ABOUT THE WINE
This single-varietal expression of Malagousia is cultivated in the Tyrnavos region at the foothills of Mount Olympus, on alluvial soils with excellent drainage and mineral complexity. Hand-harvested and farmed organically, the 2023 vintage benefits from cool mountain breezes and significant diurnal variation, preserving aromatic intensity and freshness. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, followed by short lees aging to enhance texture without obscuring the variety’s delicate floral and citrus profile.

In the glass, the wine radiates notes of honeysuckle, Meyer lemon, apricot skin, and a trace of wet stone. Its balance of gentle weight and linear drive makes it an ideal pairing for Mediterranean fare—think grilled sea bream with lemon, marinated octopus, or herbed goat cheese. The Microcosmos series underscores Zafeirakis’ commitment to site transparency and native varietal revival.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Christos Zafeirakis is widely credited with reviving the viticultural reputation of Tyrnavos and especially with resurrecting Malagousia—a near-extinct variety in the 20th century. After studying oenology in Italy and gaining experience in Tuscany and Alto Adige, Christos returned home to establish Domaine Zafeirakis in 2005, applying a vision of precision, sustainability, and authenticity. The estate is farmed organically and certified, with minimal intervention guiding both vineyard and cellar practices.

Zafeirakis is known for a thoughtful balance between tradition and innovation, focusing on local varieties (like Limniona and Malagousia) and creating wines that reflect the natural rhythm of the land. With a deep respect for biodiversity and terroir, Domaine Zafeirakis is a benchmark for modern Greek viticulture rooted in heritage.
