ABOUT THIS WINE

The long history of "Blauburgunder" (Pinot Noir) in South Tyrol has played a pivotal role in the development of the region's wine industry. Elena Walch’s "Ludwig" Pinot Noir was first produced in 2002, using grapes harvested from old vines-some of which are trained using the traditional Trentino pergola system. The limited production of 12,000 bottles reflects a rigorous selection of vineyard plots, aimed at creating a classic, complex, and premium-quality Pinot Noir. The numerous national and international accolades awarded to "Ludwig," including the top honor at the 27th Italian Pinot Noir Competition in 2025, attest to the winemaker's deep commitment to this noble grape variety.

After a typical spring, a cool spell in May slightly delayed the growing season, resulting in flowering beginning only towards the end of the month. High temperatures and drought conditions in June and July subsequently slowed vine development once more, effectively "normalizing" the pace of growth. The long-awaited rains arrived in early August, providing the vines with the water they needed. Meticulous vineyard work paid off, despite challenging weather conditions that saw hot spells alternating with cool, rainy periods. Thanks to the "South Tyrolean golden autumn," the grapes benefited from prolonged optimal weather conditions and abundant sunshine to such an extent, that the start of the harvest was postponed beyond the "traditional" early-September date. In terms of quality, the 2023 vintage is characterized by well-balanced acidity, distinctive fruit notes, and good structure.

Fermentation in stainless steel tanks with 10 days of skin contact, followed by malolactic fermentation in wood. Maturation takes place in French oak barriques for 10 months. Since 2015, a state-of-the-art fermentation facility has enabled extremely gentle handling of the grapes—whether as individual berries or whole clusters—by utilizing gravity flow. A highly sensitive destemmer and the careful transport of grapes via rail-mounted hoppers ensure gentle treatment, preserving the fruit's high quality and integrity. This cutting-edge facility represents the vanguard of fermentation centers in South Tyrol and ranks among the most modern in Italy, dedicated to producing exceptional red wines.
