2023 Forge Cellars "Freese Vineyard" Riesling, Finger Lakes, New York, USA

A striking expression of site and season, the 2023 "Freese Vineyard" Riesling from Forge Cellars is a dry, tensile wine that pulses with energy and clarity. Flinty and tightly wound on the nose, it opens to reveal lime zest, crushed stone, white peach, and green apple. The palate is razor-sharp yet textured, showing stony minerality, high-toned citrus, and a saline edge. Brisk acidity carries through to a lingering, chiseled finish that speaks of both place and precision.

ABOUT THE WINE

Sourced from the Freese Vineyard—one of Forge Cellars’ cornerstone sites on the southeast slope of Seneca Lake—this single-vineyard Riesling reflects the area's slate and shale-rich soils, steep gradients, and cool mesoclimate. Fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in a mix of neutral barrels and stainless steel, the wine sees extended lees contact without stirring, preserving its linear structure and adding subtle texture. The 2023 vintage was marked by a long, cool growing season, allowing for slow ripening and excellent phenolic development. On the nose, the wine delivers aromas of wet granite, lime blossom, and underripe stone fruit, while the palate is dry, tense, and vibrant with a refined mineral core. Pair it with shellfish, Thai dishes with lime and herbs, or goat cheese with a drizzle of honey.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Forge Cellars is a collaborative project between French winemaker Louis Barruol of Château de Saint Cosme and American partners Richard Rainey and Justin Boyette. Since its inception, Forge has focused on terroir-driven, dry Rieslings and Pinot Noirs that articulate the nuances of individual vineyard parcels around Seneca Lake. Committed to sustainable and minimal-intervention practices, the team farms organically (though not certified) and vinifies with native yeasts, long elevage, and little to no fining or filtration. Their approach marries Old World sensibility with New World potential, resulting in wines of depth, authenticity, and place.
