2023 FX Pichler "Burgstall" Riesling Federspiel, Wachau, Austria

Linear, aromatic, and bursting with crystalline energy, the 2023 “Burgstall” Federspiel Riesling is a sleek and vibrant expression of Wachau terroir. High-toned aromas of lime zest, white peach, jasmine, and wet stone give way to a taut palate driven by precise acidity and salty minerality. Bone-dry and finely etched, it finishes with citrus pith, crushed rock, and a lingering floral lift.

ABOUT THIS WINE

The “Burgstall” vineyard is a high-lying, terraced site composed of weathered granite and gneiss soils located just west of Loiben. Its elevated position and cooler mesoclimate result in wines with bright acidity, lower alcohol, and exceptional aromatic clarity—ideal for the Federspiel category, which typically emphasizes freshness and structure over power.
In 2023, a balanced and focused vintage, the Riesling was fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel and aged on fine lees to preserve purity and tension. “Burgstall” is F.X. Pichler’s most delicate Riesling, offering early approachability but with enough grip and minerality to pair with foods like sashimi, Thai dishes, or spring vegetables.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

F.X. Pichler is one of the most acclaimed estates in the Wachau, renowned for its powerful, precise white wines that showcase the region’s iconic terraced vineyards and ancient bedrock soils. Based in Dürnstein, the Pichler family has been crafting wine since the late 19th century, with Lucas Pichler now leading the domaine.
The estate works exclusively with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, and all farming is carried out with meticulous attention and sustainable practices. While Pichler is most famous for concentrated Smaragd wines, the “Burgstall” Federspiel shows the domaine’s deft touch in crafting elegant, mineral-driven whites with finesse, clarity, and unmistakable Wachau character.
