ABOUT THIS WINE

The 2023 Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge is 100% Syrah and represents one of the benchmark expressions of Hermitage. Rather than bottling individual vineyard sites, Jean-Louis Chave builds the final wine by blending parcels from several of the hill’s great lieux-dits, including Les Bessards, L’Ermite, Le Méal, Beaume and Péléat. Each contributes a different dimension: Bessards brings granite-driven structure and graphite; Méal richness and ripe fruit; Péléat finesse; Beaume spice and energy; and L’Ermite minerality and floral complexity. The parcels are vinified separately before the final blend is assembled.

The 2023 vintage is particularly elegant and expressive, showing dark berries, black cherry, violet, incense, tapenade and crushed-stone minerality. The palate is concentrated yet remarkably refined, with satiny texture, fine tannins and lively freshness. Compared with more massive vintages of Chave, 2023 emphasizes purity, perfume and finesse, while retaining the structure necessary for long-term aging. The wine received 99 points from Wine Advocate, 98 from Jeb Dunnuck and 97 from Decanter.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is one of the most historic and revered estates of the Northern Rhône. The Chave family traces its winemaking history to 1481, representing more than five centuries and sixteen generations of continuous family involvement in viticulture. Today, Jean-Louis Chave leads the domaine from its cellars in Mauves, continuing a remarkable family legacy centered on the great hill of Hermitage.

The domaine’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the art of blending terroirs. Its Hermitage holdings encompass parcels across several of the appellation’s most important lieux-dits, each contributing a different element of structure, perfume, richness and minerality to the final wine. The individual parcels are vinified separately and carefully evaluated before blending, allowing the finished Hermitage to express the complexity of the entire hill rather than a single site.

Jean-Louis Chave’s wines are celebrated for their depth, precision and extraordinary ability to age, and the domaine is widely regarded as a reference point for Syrah and Hermitage. Its combination of historic vineyard holdings, traditional winemaking and an uncompromising commitment to terroir has made Chave one of the most sought-after estates of the Rhône Valley.
