2023 Momento Wines Grenache Gris, Swartland, South Africa
A rare and radiant expression, this Grenache Gris from Swartland is a compelling study in texture and nuance. Subtle stone fruit and citrus blossom aromas lead into a palate of white peach, orange zest, and gentle spice, carried by a taut, mineral backbone. A delicate waxy texture plays against vibrant acidity, finishing with grace and quiet persistence.

ABOUT THE WINE
This 2023 Grenache Gris from Momento Wines is a singular interpretation of a grape seldom seen on its own. Sourced from dry-farmed bush vines rooted in Swartland’s decomposed granite soils, the fruit is hand-harvested and handled with restraint to allow purity and site expression to shine. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, followed by maturation in neutral oak to preserve clarity and tension. The wine shows restrained aromatics—white orchard fruit, crushed herbs, and a touch of salinity—with a palate that balances precision with texture. It’s a wine that evolves in the glass, best enjoyed with seafood risottos, grilled quail, or aged goat cheese.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Momento Wines is the personal project of winemaker Marelise Niemann, who is known for her intuitive, terroir-driven approach and dedication to lesser-known varietals. After years of experience in both established and emerging South African wineries, Niemann launched Momento to explore the potential of old vines and marginal grapes through minimal intervention winemaking. She works closely with growers in Swartland and beyond, sourcing fruit from sustainably and often organically farmed vineyards. Her wines reflect South Africa’s evolving identity: rooted in place, exploratory in spirit, and always finely crafted.
