A refined dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most historic estates, the 2019 “Gelblack” balances vibrant acidity with depth and clarity. ABOUT THIS WINE
The “Gelblack” Riesling Trocken is Schloss Johannisberg’s signature dry bottling, sourced exclusively from their single-vineyard monopole on the south-facing slopes above the Rhine River. The vineyard’s quartzite and loam soils, combined with optimal exposure and elevation, create ideal conditions for Riesling to achieve both ripeness and mineral precision.
2019 was a standout vintage, producing wines with excellent acidity, structure, and aromatic intensity. Grapes were harvested by hand, gently pressed, and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve purity. A short period of lees contact added texture and complexity without masking freshness. The result is a crisp, bone-dry Riesling with crystalline citrus fruit, floral notes, and a cool, stony backbone. It pairs effortlessly with sushi, grilled white asparagus, or pork schnitzel.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Schloss Johannisberg, perched above the Rhine in the Rheingau, is not only one of Germany’s most iconic estates—it is the birthplace of Riesling as a varietal wine, with a documented history dating back over 1,200 years. As the world’s first Riesling-only vineyard (since 1720), the estate has long set the standard for precision, age-worthiness, and site expression.
The “Gelblack” label (yellow seal) represents their dry Riesling category and reflects the estate’s focus on clarity, minerality, and balance. The estate practices sustainable viticulture, with meticulous handwork in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the cellar. Schloss Johannisberg remains a benchmark for Riesling, crafting wines that bridge tradition and modern finesse across a full spectrum of styles.
