2024 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “La Romanée”, Burgundy, France

The 2024 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “La Romanée” is a refined and deeply mineral expression of Chardonnay, offering aromas of lemon zest, white peach, pear, green apple, and white flowers layered with notes of wet stone, chalk, and subtle toasted almond. The palate is focused and powerful, with beautifully integrated acidity, impressive mineral tension, and a broader, more structured texture than the domaine’s other Premier Crus. Elegant yet substantial, the wine finishes with lingering citrus, saline minerality, and a delicate touch of oak.

ABOUT THIS WINE

Produced from 100% Chardonnay from the domaine’s 0.81-hectare parcel of La Romanée, this Premier Cru is planted on a south-east-facing hillside in Chassagne-Montrachet. The vines were planted in 1957 and 2015, with the older vines contributing depth and concentration. The soils are composed of clay, limestone, and marl, giving the wine a combination of richness, freshness, and pronounced mineral character. The vineyard is organically certified, with the soils cultivated by tracked plowing, and the grapes are harvested by hand. In the cellar, the wine is aged for approximately 14 to 16 months in 228- and 350-liter oak barrels, with 30–50% new oak. The 2024 vintage shows the vineyard’s characteristic backbone and mineral power, with the fruit still relatively reserved in its youth and a long, focused finish.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine Morey-Coffinet is a highly regarded Chassagne-Montrachet estate formed from the union of the Morey and Coffinet families. Today, Thibault Morey continues the family tradition with a strong emphasis on organic farming, careful soil management, and precise, terroir-focused winemaking. The domaine farms a collection of important vineyards throughout Chassagne-Montrachet and neighboring Puligny-Montrachet, including En Cailleret, La Romanée, Dent de Chien, Blanchot-Dessus, Les Pucelles, and the Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet. Their approach in the cellar combines traditional Burgundy élevage with relatively large 228- and 350-liter barrels, allowing the wines to develop texture and complexity while preserving their individual vineyard character. La Romanée is one of the domaine’s most compelling sites, producing a wine defined by greater backbone, power, and mineral depth.
