2024 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “Morgeot” Rouge, Burgundy, France

ABOUT THIS WINE

Produced from 100% Pinot Noir, the “Morgeot” comes from a small 0.2-hectare parcel of vines planted in 1965 on the south-east-facing slopes of Chassagne-Montrachet. The clay-limestone soils provide an ideal balance of water retention and drainage while contributing the mineral character and structure associated with Morgeot. The vineyard is organically certified, with the vines harvested by hand. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a natural fermentation and are aged for approximately 14 to 16 months in 228- and 350-liter oak barrels, with 40–50% new oak. The wine is neither fined nor filtered, allowing the character of the fruit and vineyard to remain at the forefront. The 2024 vintage shows the combination of ripe fruit, freshness, fine tannins, and mineral tension that makes Morgeot such a compelling red-wine site in Chassagne-Montrachet.

Domaine Morey-Coffinet is a respected Chassagne-Montrachet domaine born from the union of the Morey and Coffinet families. Today, Thibault Morey continues the family's tradition with a strong emphasis on organic and biodynamic vineyard practices and a hands-off approach in the cellar. The domaine farms approximately 8.5 hectares, with both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir planted across a collection of important Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet vineyards. While the domaine is particularly celebrated for its white wines, its red Burgundies demonstrate the same commitment to expressing individual terroir. The “Morgeot” Rouge is a particularly distinctive example, showing how the warm, generous character of Chassagne can be balanced by the freshness, limestone structure, and finesse of Pinot Noir.
