2024 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet “Les Houillères”, Burgundy, France

ABOUT THIS WINE

Produced from 100% Chardonnay, “Les Houillères” comes from a 0.82-hectare parcel on the northern plateau of Chassagne-Montrachet, close to the border with Puligny-Montrachet and near the celebrated Encégnières and Vide-Bourse vineyards. The parcel includes vines planted as early as 1955, giving the wine additional concentration and depth. South-facing exposure and clay-limestone soils, with an abundance of limestone stones, provide both ripeness and mineral tension. The vineyard is organically certified and harvested by hand. In the cellar, the wine spends 12 to 14 months in 228- and 350-liter oak barrels, approximately 30–50% of which are new, and it is bottled without filtration. The 2024 vintage shows a particularly fresh and energetic profile, with ripe peach and citrus fruit carried by fine mineral tension and a persistent finish.

Domaine Morey-Coffinet has been based in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1980 and brings together the viticultural heritage of the Morey and Coffinet families. Today, Thibault Morey leads the domaine, continuing its focus on expressing the individual character of Burgundy's vineyards through careful farming and restrained winemaking. The estate farms its vineyards organically and incorporates biodynamic practices, with an emphasis on living soils, manual harvesting, and minimal intervention in the cellar. Morey-Coffinet's range includes village wines, numerous Premier Crus, and the Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet. “Les Houillères” has become an important cuvée for the domaine, showcasing the particularly stony, limestone-rich character of this northern part of Chassagne and producing a wine that combines the richness of Chassagne with remarkable freshness, precision, and mineral definition.
