2024 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet “Les Houillères”, Burgundy, France 1.5L MAG
The 2024 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet “Les Houillères” 1.5L Magnum is a beautifully expressive and mineral-driven Chardonnay, offering aromas of smoky apple, pear, ripe citrus, and white peach layered with notes of rosemary, lemon verbena, wet limestone, and subtle toasted hazelnut. The palate is rich yet remarkably fresh, with a fine line of acidity carrying the wine through a silky, concentrated texture. Chalky minerality and saline energy build toward a long, persistent finish, giving the wine both generosity and precision. The magnum format should allow this 2024 to develop beautifully over time.
ABOUT THIS WINE
Produced from 100% Chardonnay, “Les Houillères” comes from a 0.82-hectare parcel on the southern-exposed plateau in the northern part of Chassagne-Montrachet, close to the border with Puligny-Montrachet and just below some of the Côte de Beaune's most celebrated vineyards. The clay-limestone soils are rich in limestone stones, while vines planted as early as 1955 contribute natural concentration and depth. The vineyard is organically certified and harvested by hand. In the cellar, the wine is aged for 12 to 14 months in 228- and 350-liter oak barrels, with 30–50% new oak, followed by bottling without filtration. The 2024 vintage emphasizes freshness, juicy peach and citrus fruit, and the smoky, chalky mineral character that makes Les Houillères such a distinctive site.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Domaine Morey-Coffinet has been rooted in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1980, when Michel Morey and Fabienne Coffinet united the vineyards inherited from their respective families. Today, their son Thibault Morey carries the domaine forward, with a philosophy centered on revealing the character of exceptional Burgundy terroirs. The estate farms approximately nine hectares, with roughly 80% planted to Chardonnay, and its holdings include important Premier Cru vineyards such as La Romanée, En Cailleret, Dent de Chien, and Blanchot-Dessus, as well as the Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet. Organic farming and biodynamic principles guide the vineyard work, while recent generations have increasingly incorporated horse plowing and other practices designed to preserve living soils. The domaine's wines are made with a focus on purity, maturity, and transparency, allowing each vineyard to express its own combination of fruit, limestone, freshness, and texture.
