ABOUT THIS WINE

Matassa Rouge is typically a blend of Carignan and Grenache Noir from biodynamically farmed, old vines rooted in schist and limestone soils near the village of Calce in Roussillon. The 2024 vintage reflects a cooler, more moderate season, preserving brightness and aromatic lift. Grapes are hand-harvested and whole-cluster fermented with native yeasts in concrete or large old barrels.

Vinified with minimal extraction and no additives—no fining, no filtration, and little or no added sulfur—the wine is vibrant and unadorned. Aromas of strawberry, red plum, garrigue, and a touch of pepper give way to a palate that is silky, crunchy, and immensely drinkable. It is meant to be served slightly chilled and enjoyed with ease.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine Matassa was founded in 2003 by Tom Lubbe, a New Zealand-born winemaker who settled in the rugged hills of Roussillon to craft wines of place with minimal intervention. Drawing on old vines, native varieties, and biodynamic farming, Matassa produces expressive, low-alcohol wines that defy the expectations of the region. Lubbe’s reds are light in body, high in energy, and full of aromatic complexity—an authentic reflection of Mediterranean terroir through a natural lens.
