2024 Peter Lauer "No. 111" Schönfels Grand Cru Riesling Kabinett, Mosel, Germany

Electric, filigreed, and packed with crystalline energy, the 2024 “No. 111” Kabinett from the Grand Cru Schönfels vineyard is a thrilling Mosel Riesling—ethereal yet deeply expressive. Aromas of lime blossom, white peach, and crushed slate give way to a racy, off-dry palate brimming with green apple, grapefruit, and cool herbal notes. Precision-cut acidity and stony minerality carry the wine through a long, feather-light finish.

ABOUT THIS WINE

“No. 111” hails from the steep, terraced Schönfels vineyard in the Saar—a Grand Cru site characterized by gray slate soils and dramatic slopes. Perched above the village of Reinig and exposed to cool breezes, this site consistently produces Rieslings of tension, lift, and clarity.
In 2024, cooler harvest conditions preserved high-toned aromatics and razor-sharp acidity, making for a classically styled Kabinett with just a touch of sweetness. Vinified with native yeasts in stainless steel and large neutral fuder casks, the wine is unforced and transparent, showing delicate fruit with unmistakable Saar slate character. This Kabinett is both refreshing and age-worthy, and pairs beautifully with Thai cuisine, fresh goat cheese, or lightly smoked fish.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Peter Lauer, based in the Saar subregion of the Mosel, is widely regarded as one of Germany’s finest Riesling producers. Now led by Florian Lauer, the estate emphasizes site expression and meticulous vineyard work, with a special focus on dry and off-dry wines from steep, slate-rich crus.
Lauer’s wines are known for their elegance, soaring aromatics, and spine-tingling acidity. Each bottling is designated by a “Fass” (barrel) number—“No. 111” referring to this specific cask from the Schönfels vineyard. While Lauer is often associated with feinherb styles, his Kabinetts, especially from Grand Cru sites like Schönfels, offer a compelling balance of delicacy, energy, and terroir transparency that sets them apart in the world of German Riesling.
