2024 Tasca D'Almerita Fondazione Whitaker Mozia, Sicily, Italy
A singular expression of Sicily’s native Grillo grape, the 2024 Fondazione Whitaker Mozia comes from a historic island vineyard surrounded by the saltwater lagoon of Marsala. This vibrant coastal white captures the essence of its Mediterranean setting with aromas of citrus blossom, white peach, tangerine, wild herbs, and sea spray. The palate is bright and textured, balancing ripe stone fruit and tropical notes with refreshing acidity, a distinctive saline minerality, and a long, savory finish.

ABOUT THE WINE
Produced from 100% Grillo grown on the tiny island of Mozia (San Pantaleo), an ancient Phoenician settlement off Sicily’s western coast, this wine reflects one of the region’s most unusual vineyard sites. The vines grow in sandy, windswept soils surrounded by shallow salt flats and the Mediterranean Sea, where constant breezes preserve freshness while the warm Sicilian sun builds aromatic intensity.
The vineyard is cultivated using traditional methods, including low bush-trained vines and the historic Marsalese pruning system, which helps protect the grapes from excessive heat and sunlight. Harvest is performed entirely by hand, with grapes transported by boat from the island before vinification at Tasca d’Almerita’s winery. Fermentation and aging emphasize purity and freshness, preserving Grillo’s natural aromatics and the unmistakable maritime character of Mozia.
The 2024 vintage delivers layers of lemon zest, grapefruit, melon, peach, Mediterranean herbs, and a subtle almond note. Its combination of generous fruit, lively acidity, and briny minerality makes it especially versatile with food. Ideal pairings include oysters, grilled prawns, seafood pasta, fresh cheeses, vegetable dishes, and Sicilian classics such as swordfish with capers and citrus.
