ABOUT THIS WINE
The estate's second wine is a different expression of the Calon terroir. With an average of 75% Merlot in the blends, Marquis de Calon Ségur is entirely distinct from the first wine. "It benefits from a true expression," emphasizes Vincent Millet. "The plots are differentiated from the outset." Vineyards are planted in a thick layer of gravel deposited by the river during the Quaternary period. Predominantly clay subsoil of Tertiary age. At the top of the gravel deposits, there is also a thin layer of clay of lacustrine origin.
Grapes are hand-picked with the initial inspection of the grapes in the vineyard. Vibrating destemmer and manual sorting table are utilized. Fertilization takes place in temperature-controlled, truncated conical stainless steel tanks. Maceration occurs for 18 to 21 days. Finally, this wine benefits from careful aging, generally lasting 17 months, with one-third of the barrels being new.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Calon was the name given to the boat used in the Middle Ages to transport wood from one bank of the Garonne to the other. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, who received the estate upon his marriage, added his name to it, and thus the label of this 3rd growth classified wine of Saint-Estèphe was born.
Château Calon Ségur emained in the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the 19th century, until 2012, when the property was bought by Suravenir Assurances, which continues to produce wines with an inimitable style marked by the seal of the appellation.
Château Calon Ségur has also become famous for its label adorning the estate's bottles. Since the 18th century, the heart has been the symbol of the property, paying homage to the Marquis de Ségur's famous phrase: "I make wine in Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon." For nearly three centuries, Château Calon Ségur enthusiasts have remained loyal to this iconic estate of the appellation.
