2022 Penfolds "Bin 389" Cabernet-Shiraz, South Australia, Australia

A commanding and harmonious blend, the 2022 Bin 389 showcases the synergy of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in classic Penfolds fashion—powerful, polished, and age-worthy. The nose opens with aromas of blackberry compote, red currant, dark chocolate, and baking spice. On the palate, it’s plush yet structured, with layers of black cherry, cassis, licorice, tobacco, and espresso. Fine-grained tannins and well-integrated oak create a rich texture, while a vibrant core of acidity lifts the long, savory finish.

ABOUT THIS WINE

Nicknamed “Baby Grange” for its partial maturation in the same barrels used for Penfolds Grange, Bin 389 is one of the most iconic red blends in Australia. The 2022 vintage is crafted from select parcels across South Australia’s top regions, including Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra, highlighting regional character while maintaining the Penfolds house style.

The blend typically consists of approximately 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Shiraz, combining Cabernet’s linear drive and structure with Shiraz’s plush fruit and mid-palate generosity. Fruit is fermented in stainless steel before aging for 12 months in American oak hogsheads, 25% of which are seasoned barrels from the previous Grange vintage.

The 2022 release reflects a mild but dry growing season, resulting in intense flavor concentration, polished tannins, and excellent balance. The wine is approachable in youth but destined to evolve beautifully over 10–20 years.
