2023 Weingut Bründlmayer Riesling “Zöbinger Heiligenstein” Erste Lage, Kamptal, Austria
This wine is a particularly precise, elegant and mineral-driven expression of Riesling. Aromas of ripe peach, citrus peel, white flowers and cool spice, followed by lemon zest, white currant and a subtle youthful lees character. The palate combines juicy fruit with energetic acidity and finishes long, spicy and distinctly mineral.

ABOUT THIS WINE
The 2023 Weingut Bründlmayer Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling is a single-vineyard Riesling from one of the Kamptal’s most celebrated sites. Bründlmayer farms about 12 hectares in the center of the Heiligenstein, whose distinctive geology is roughly 270-million-year-old Permian sandstone with conglomerates and volcanic material. The terraced vineyard faces predominantly south/southwest at roughly 230–345 meters, combining warm daytime conditions with cool nighttime air flowing through the Kamp Valley. That temperature swing helps Riesling develop ripe fruit while retaining acidity and aromatic precision.
The growing season started relatively late, with cool, dry conditions delaying budbreak. Rain beginning in April ended the preceding dry spell, and the season ultimately produced wines that Bründlmayer characterizes by charm, richness, structure, and depth. The Heiligenstein fruit was harvested October 2–3, 2023, at a relatively low yield.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at 15–20°C (59–68°F). After fermentation, the wine remains on its fine lees in stainless steel until bottling in summer; the 2023 was bottled in July 2024.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Weingut Bründlmayer is a family-run estate in Langenlois and one of the benchmark producers of Austria’s Kamptal region. Led by Willi Bründlmayer, the estate farms around 94 hectares, with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling at the heart of its production. Its vineyards include some of Kamptal’s most celebrated sites, including Heiligenstein, Lamm, Käferberg, Steinmassl, and Loiserberg.
Sustainability and thoughtful farming are central to Bründlmayer’s philosophy. The estate has avoided synthetic fertilizers since 1979 and has been certified organic since 2015, with an emphasis on biodiversity, healthy soils, and preserving its remarkable old vines, some of which are more than 90 years old. In the cellar, the approach is similarly restrained, allowing the character of each vineyard and vintage to remain at the forefront.
Bründlmayer has also played an important role in shaping modern Austrian wine. Willi was a founding member and the first chairman of the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (ÖTW), which established the 1ÖTW Erste Lage classification for Austria’s finest vineyard sites. This commitment to terroir is especially evident in wines from the historic Heiligenstein vineyard, where distinctive ancient sandstone soils produce some of the estate’s most renowned and age-worthy Rieslings.
