2022 Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard Bourgogne Hautes Côtes De Beaune Blanc "Sous Eguisons", Burgundy, France

A luminous and finely etched Chardonnay, the 2022 “Sous Eguisons” offers a beautifully restrained yet expressive take on the Hautes Côtes de Beaune. Aromas of white peach, citrus blossom, and crushed limestone open into a taut, mineral-driven palate with Meyer lemon, green apple, and a hint of hazelnut. The texture is sleek and lightly creamy, framed by brisk acidity and a saline finish that lingers with quiet precision.

ABOUT THIS WINE

“Sous Eguisons” is a single-vineyard Chardonnay from high-elevation sites west of Chassagne-Montrachet, where cooler temperatures and limestone-clay soils yield wines of tension and clarity. The 2022 vintage brought excellent balance, combining ripe, expressive fruit with the freshness emblematic of the Hautes Côtes.
Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard farms organically (certified since 2014), with hand harvesting and minimal intervention in the cellar. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts in barrel, followed by 12 months of aging in mostly used French oak. Malolactic fermentation is completed, but new oak is restrained to let the terroir shine. The result is a refined white Burgundy that marries citrus-laced purity with subtle texture and length. Pair with shellfish, roasted chicken, or a delicate cheese soufflé.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard, now led by Caroline Lestimé (daughter of Jean-Noël), is one of the quiet stars of Chassagne-Montrachet, crafting soulful, terroir-driven wines from both prestigious Premier Cru holdings and lesser-known gems like “Sous Eguisons.” Since taking the reins in the 1990s, Caroline has steadily transitioned the domaine to organic farming and more restrained, precise winemaking.
Her style emphasizes transparency and energy over richness, and the wines consistently punch above their appellation. In “Sous Eguisons,” she showcases the potential of the Hautes Côtes with a wine that offers the elegance and minerality of top Côte de Beaune whites—at a fraction of the price.
