ABOUT THE WINE

Château La Freynelle lies in the Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux, between the Dordogne and Garonne rivers. Although the estate is geographically located in Entre-Deux-Mers, that appellation is reserved for white wines; its red wines are therefore bottled under the broader Bordeaux appellation.

The estate's red Bordeaux is traditionally a Merlot-led blend with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, varieties particularly well suited to La Freynelle's clay-limestone soils. Merlot supplies the wine's plush plum and black-cherry fruit and rounded texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure, cassis, and savory depth. Cabernet Franc adds aromatic lift, freshness, and subtle floral and herbal nuances.

The warm, successful 2020 Bordeaux vintage gave the wine ample ripeness while retaining the freshness essential to its balance. Château La Freynelle has been owned by the Barthe family since 1789, making it a notably long-standing family property in Bordeaux. Today the estate is led by Véronique Barthe, representing the seventh generation of her family and continuing a history of winegrowing that stretches back more than two centuries.

The property is located near Daignac, in the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers, an undulating landscape historically planted to both Bordeaux's red and white varieties. Its vineyards encompass clay-limestone and related soils that provide a strong foundation for Merlot and the Cabernet varieties while also supporting the estate's well-known white-wine production.

Véronique Barthe's approach combines the family's long-established Bordeaux traditions with modern vineyard and cellar practices. The emphasis is on careful farming, precise harvesting, and restrained winemaking that allows ripe fruit and freshness to remain at the center of each wine. Rather than pursuing excessive extraction or oak influence, Château La Freynelle is known for accessible, balanced Bordeaux with clear varietal character and a strong sense of place.
