2024 Weingut Prager Grüner Veltliner Smaragd “Wachstum Bodenstein”, Wachau, Austria
The 2024 Weingut Prager Grüner Veltliner Smaragd “Wachstum Bodenstein” is a powerful and remarkably precise expression of the Wachau, offering aromas of ripe pear, yellow apple, white peach, and citrus zest layered with notes of white pepper, fresh herbs, and crushed stone. The palate is concentrated and full-bodied, balancing generous orchard fruit with vibrant acidity and a distinctive mineral backbone. Subtle spice and savory herbal nuances add complexity, while the long, focused finish reveals refreshing citrus, saline minerality, and impressive persistence. Combining the richness of the Smaragd classification with the precision of Prager’s high-altitude vineyard sites, this is a compelling example of Austria’s finest dry Grüner Veltliner.

ABOUT THIS WINE
Produced from 100% Grüner Veltliner, the 2024 “Wachstum Bodenstein” comes from a distinctive high-elevation parcel in the upper reaches of Ried Achleiten, near Weißenkirchen in the Wachau. Planted in 1997 by Toni Bodenstein, the vineyard contains approximately 110 different clones of Grüner Veltliner, reflecting his commitment to preserving genetic diversity and exploring the variety’s full potential. The steep, terraced site sits at approximately 460 meters above sea level, where sparse, rocky Gföhler gneiss soils and cooler conditions encourage slow ripening while preserving freshness and aromatic complexity. The grapes are hand-harvested and spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, followed by approximately seven months of aging in stainless steel on the fine lees. Classified as Smaragd, the wine delivers concentration and structure while maintaining remarkable precision, with the 2024 vintage showing citrus zest, green apple, delicate herbal spice, smoky mineral nuances, and a persistent saline finish.
