2016 Domaine Tawse Gevrey-Chambertin "En Pallud", Burgundy, France

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin en Palud, which escaped the frost, was picked on 30 September and fully de-stemmed. It has a bright red cherry and crushed strawberry-scented bouquet with a hint of cold wet stone. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry, a mixture of blackcurrant, raspberry, spice and a sharp, almost flinty finish that is short but detailed. This has very good potential and is only a whisker the behind the 2015.

ABOUT THIS WINE

The wines here are made by Englishman, Mark Fincham. Mark’s handling of the domain’s grands crus have earned him the respect of local vignerons. His village wines are made with the same exacting detail. En Pallud sits just below Mazis-Chambertin, in the heart of the village. This is a serious Gevrey: cool, fresh, mineral, and beautifully balanced.

"En Pallud" appellation extends over calcareous and brown soils. This wine is 100% destemmed fruit resulting in a clean finish. This wine has been aged 18 months using 33% new oak.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

From their base opposite each other in Nuits-St Georges, Domaine Tawse and its négociant arm, Marchand-Tawse, are jointly responsible for a tempting array of red and white Burgundy. The domain was developed in 2012 by Burgundy aficionados, Pascal Marchand, a Burgundy négociant with a career that included Comte Armand and Domaine de la Vougeraie, and fellow Canadian, Morey Tawse. The heart of Domaine Tawse, formerly Domaine Maume, lies in Gevrey-Chambertin and produces outstanding communal, premiers and grands crus from Gevrey and the northern sector of the Côte de Beaune, all of which are farmed biodynamically.

Englishman Mark Fincham, who came from Domaine de Pegau in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is the domaine’s winemaker and his wines are modern, elegant and easily approachable even in their youth. The négociant arm, Marchand-Tawse, showcases the region's best using bought-in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from vineyards ranging from entry-level Bourgogne to grand cru with winemaker Thomas Dinel overseeing the whole process from grape to bottle and taking its well-made range of Burgundy to the next level of quality.
