ABOUT THIS WINE:
After a rigorous sorting process, the grapes for this wine underwent a cold soak (cold maceration) at about 10°C for 5–7 days before fermentation. Fermentation lasted roughly 12–15 days at controlled temperatures between 26–29°C using selected yeasts. The wine remained on the skins for extended maceration, with daily tastings guiding extraction decisions. Finally, the wine was aged in about 70% first use French oak barrels, & the remaining in second/third use French oak for around 18 months
Montes intentionally balances new oak with neutral barrels so the wine gains structure, spice, mocha, and cedar complexity without overwhelming the Carmenère character. The oak integration in Purple Angel is generally considered exceptionally refined for such a powerful wine.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER:
Founded in 1987 by Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, and later joined by Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, Montes was created with the ambition to produce world-class Chilean wines. Their breakthrough came with the first Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon, widely considered Chile’s first premium export wine, which helped redefine international perceptions of Chilean wine.
Building on that success, Montes expanded its portfolio with acclaimed Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah wines while pioneering vineyard development in Apalta and Colchagua. The winery later introduced iconic labels such as Montes Alpha “M,” Montes Folly, and Purple Angel, all of which earned international recognition.
Today, Montes is regarded as one of Chile’s most influential wineries, celebrated for its innovation, quality, and role in elevating Chile’s reputation on the global wine stage
