ABOUT THIS WINE
Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Since 1843, the House of Krug has honored this vision with each new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.
Champagne Number 1, which is known today as Krug Grande Cuvée, is the fullest expression of Champagne, re-created every year, regardless of annual climate variations. Krug Grande Cuvée is a blend of over 120 different wines from more than 10 different years.
Blending so many different wines from different years lends a fullness of flavors and aromas that would be impossible to express with the wines of a single year. It is a complete orchestra playing together in harmony.
Krug Grande Cuvée 161ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2005, a year of patience and diligence during which a mild winter was followed by a hot, overcast summer. While the harvest in Champagne officially began on 12th September, Krug determined from its tastings that the fullest expression of Champagne would require another week on the vines. The generous yield revealed an exceptional level of freshness. In all, reserve wines from the House’s extensive library made up 32% of the final blend, bringing the breadth and roundness so essential to each Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée. Due its size, Krug Grande Cuvée 161ème Édition Jeroboam spent at least two years longer on the lees than the 75cl format. All formats above 75cl are all hand-riddled and hand labeled.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
The House was established in Reims in 1843, by Joseph Krug, a visionary non-conformist with an uncompromising philosophy. Having understood that the true essence of Champagne is pleasure itself, his dream was to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Paying close attention to the vineyard’s character, respecting the individuality of each plot and its wine, as well as building an extensive library of reserve wines from many different years allowed Joseph Krug to fulfil his dream.
With a very original approach to Champagne making, he decided to go beyond the notion of vintage to create the most generous expression of Champagne, every year. Thus, he founded a House in which all Champagnes are of the same level of distinction.
Six generations of the Krug family have perpetuated this dream, enriching the founder’s vision and savoir faire.
