2021 Sohm & Kracher Gruner Veltliner "Lion", Niederösterreich, Austria
‘Lion’ is a varietal Gruner, showing exotic aromatics of green apple and pear, followed by palate full of white pepper tinged stone fruit.
ABOUT THIS WINE
This wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation, as do all the wines. It is the only wine in the line-up that fully ferments in stainless steel where it spends one year on its fine lees.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Founded by Gerhard Kracher and Aldo Sohm in 2008, Sohm & Kracher produces varietal wines from indigenous grapes in Austria’s Weinviertel region, seeking to highlight the diverse soil profile and distinct microclimate.
When long-time friends Aldo Sohm and Gerhard Kracher decided to make wine together, they brought to the project decades of collective experience and a shared love of great foods and wines of the world — especially dry grüner veltliner from their native Austria. They knew the focus would be Grüner Veltliner grown in the Weinviertel made according to two basic principles: the wines should be (low to) moderate in alcohol and should never be unctuous in character. Since their first vintage in , they have kept a sharp focus on one variety — from the brisk, peppery “Lion” to the Chablis-like “St. Georg.”
