2016 Bérêche Et Fils "Aÿ" Grand Cru, Champagne, France
Aromas of stone, chalk, and fresh red berries. The fresh palate is broad and powerful where spices dominate, cardamom and white pepper underline the structure.
ABOUT THIS WINE
This special grand cru from 40+ year old vines hails from the "champagne of kings" region, Aÿ. These older vines have strong complexity that gives a firm structure to the mix of Pinot Noir (80%) and Chardonnay (20%). This wine ages on lees for 78 months before disgorging. Expect a spectacular creamy texture and very fine velvet bubbles. The dosage is 4g/L which allows the stone and chalk of the terroir to shine through without masking the power of the pinot noir.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Jean-Pierre Bérêche was one of the first growers to establish an independent reputation, and his sons Raphaël and Vincent have built on that work to craft some of today’s most distinctive Champagnes.
With roughly equal plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier spread over multiple villages, the brothers have an incredible diversity of sources within their 9 hectares.
Fastidious organic viticulture is part of their secret, but the duo brings equal focus to every facet of their work. One notable example is their usage of cork – instead of crown cap - for aging young Champagnes en tirage.
