2018 Appassionata Riesling "GG", Willamette Valley, Oregon, USA

Structured, dry, and profoundly age-worthy, the 2018 Appassionata “GG” Riesling channels the precision of German Grosses Gewächs styling through the cool-climate lens of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Aromatics of lime oil, quince, crushed slate, and white blossoms lead into a tightly coiled palate of citrus peel, stone fruit, and saline minerality. The texture is firm yet elegant, with vibrant acidity and a long, phenolic finish that promises longevity.

ABOUT THIS WINE

The “GG” (Grosses Gewächs) designation here is more than symbolic—it reflects a deep respect for the dry Rieslings of Germany’s great vineyard sites. Crafted by Dr. Loosen’s Ernst Loosen in collaboration with Oregon’s J. Christopher Winery, the 2018 vintage comes from the La Bohème Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. High elevation and volcanic soils offer both intensity and clarity, with extended lees contact in large oak casks adding depth and texture. Fermentation is spontaneous, and the wine is aged for several years before release, emphasizing its cellar potential. With a bone-dry profile and electric structure, it pairs beautifully with pork, smoked trout, or spiced Asian dishes.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Appassionata is the pinnacle project of Ernst Loosen in Oregon, where his passion for Riesling meets New World terroir. Founded under the philosophy that great wines require both time and patience, the estate produces wines that are released only after extensive aging. Loosen applies the same principles that have guided his work in the Mosel—biodiversity in the vineyard, native yeast fermentation, and long aging—to Oregon’s unique volcanic and marine soils. The focus is on purity, site expression, and longevity. With Appassionata, Riesling is reimagined for Oregon—not as a curiosity, but as a serious, cellar-worthy white with deep European roots and a Pacific Northwest soul.
