2019 Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo "Enrico VI", Piedmont, Italy
A Barolo of high standing, both austere and complex. Deep red garnet in color. Delicately spiced bouquet with notes of eucalyptus, licorice and menthol, mature fruit such as liqueur soaked cherries, blackberries and prunes and hints of violets and medicinal herbs. Powerful on the palate, lightly acidic and fresh. Lasting finish.
ABOUT THIS WINE
The austerity of a vineyard considered among the top for the appellation. It originates from an exceptional vineyard occupying an area of about two hectares at an altitude of 300 metres in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto, set in iron-rich soil planted with vines that are over 50 years old and exposed southwest. The name “Enrico VI” was coined in early 1970s by Paolo Cordero di Montezemolo to commemorate the birth of his sixth child (1959) named Enrico along with the purchase of this prestigious Barolo vineyard in 1965: the perfect occasion to celebrate two important events with a single tribute. Since then, our Barolo Enrico VI has been the only expression of Barolo from a different territory, far removed from the rest of the vineyards in the Annunziata hamlet of La Morra. A microclimate that tends to be cooler, less ventilated, on a more evolved and compact clay soil: the result is a “masculine” Barolo with a strong personality, sturdiness, earthiness and prominent mentholated notes. The palate displays more breadth and volume but, at the same time, an abundance of soft and sweet tannins.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Since the early 1800s, the Falletti family regarded Monfalletto as the crown jewel of their holdings in La Morra. While the vineyard’s wines were first enjoyed locally, commercial production began in the 1830s and grew steadily under Giacinto Massimiliano Falletti, later expanding significantly under Eulalia Dalla Chiesa di Cervignasco. The estate ultimately passed to the Cordero di Montezemolo family, whose deep connection to Monfalletto has shaped its history for over a century. Their legacy of service and loyalty—captured in the motto “Honneur et Fidélité”—continues to guide the estate. Today, Elena and Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo carry this heritage forward for future generations.
One of the distinctive features of their vineyards is that they are particularly large and unified in a few sites, unlike the majority of other local producers, who operate on “micro-plots” located in various parts of the area. This gives a logistical and operational advantage which facilitates quick & effective intervention guaranteeing a high level of consistency as well as encouraging the real beneficial effect of organic cultivation. The Montezemolo family cultivate their land in compliance with a 100% certified organic farming system, and grow varietals typical of the area: Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, Arneis and Chardonnay.
