2019 Paolo Bea "Rosso de Veo", Umbria, Italy

This expressive Umbrian red offers an untamed, soulful snapshot of the Bea estate's younger Sagrantino vines. Broad and wild yet impressively refined, it exudes dark plum and blackberry richness wrapped in a core of fresh herbs, licorice, and dried roses. Earthy and textural, with bright acidity and gentle tannins, its savory depth is lifted by a vivid mineral tension and a long, vibrant finish. A true testament to natural winemaking with unmistakable character.

ABOUT THIS WINE

The Rosso de Veo is Paolo Bea’s boldest red made entirely from 100% Sagrantino—typically known for its dense structure and longevity—but this cuvée shows a more accessible, energetic side. The fruit is sourced from younger vines on the estate's hilltop Montefalco vineyards, situated at 1,300 feet elevation. Vinification is as traditional and hands-off as it gets: no added yeasts, no temperature control, no filtration, and extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks. After 50 days of maceration on the skins, the wine is aged for over three years in barrel and bottle before release.

The 2019 vintage brings intense aromas of black cherry, anise, saddle leather, and Mediterranean scrub, opening up into savory mineral tones and dried fig. Despite Sagrantino’s inherent power, the wine maintains lift and verve thanks to the estate's biodynamic farming, high elevation, and long, slow fermentation. Its tannins are muscular but polished, making it a compelling partner to braised lamb, grilled sausages, aged cheeses, or hearty wild mushroom dishes.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Paolo Bea is not merely a winemaker but a deeply rooted steward of Montefalco tradition. The family has farmed this land since the 1500s, and Paolo—with his sons Giuseppe (vineyard and cellar) and Giampiero (business and philosophy)—has built a cult following for producing uncompromising, soulful wines grounded in respect for nature. The estate practices organic and biodynamic viticulture, allowing biodiversity and time to guide the rhythm of the vines.

Bea’s wines are released only when they are deemed ready, often years after harvest. Their signature is a rare combination of authenticity, wild beauty, and grace, always avoiding manipulation in favor of revealing the purest expression of Sagrantino and the Montefalco terroir. Every bottle speaks of the land and the patience required to honor it.
