2023 Domaine de la Pepière "Clos de Briords" Vieilles Vignes, Muscadet Sèvre et Maine , Loire Valley, France
Lively, mineral-driven, and classically taut, the 2023 Clos des Briords is a benchmark Muscadet that channels its granite-rich terroir with crystalline precision. Aromas of crushed oyster shell, lemon pith, and white peach introduce a palate of saline tension, zesty citrus, and delicate orchard fruit. The texture is lithe and bracing, supported by mouthwatering acidity and a clean, persistent finish that calls for the sea.

ABOUT THE WINE
The 2023 Clos des Briords is crafted from old-vine Melon de Bourgogne, with plantings dating back to 1930, rooted in the deep granitic soils of the Briords lieu-dit near Maisdon-sur-Sèvre. These vines are among the oldest in the appellation, yielding naturally low quantities of intensely concentrated fruit. The wine undergoes a slow, natural fermentation using native yeasts, followed by extended aging on the lees for added complexity and textural finesse.
Aromatically, it’s all citrus rind, crushed stones, and wet chalk, with hints of fennel and sea spray. On the palate, Clos des Briords balances tensile structure with subtle weight, unfolding flavors of lemon peel, green apple skin, and saline minerality. There's a quiet depth beneath its brisk exterior, suggesting graceful development over several years.
Farmed organically and hand-harvested, this cuvée epitomizes precision and transparency. Enjoy it now with oysters, scallop crudo, or chèvre, or cellar it for up to a decade for added dimension.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Domaine de la Pépière, founded in 1984 by Marc Ollivier, is one of the Loire Valley’s iconic estates for Muscadet, known for its unwavering commitment to terroir expression and traditional methods. Now run by Rémi Branger and Gwénaëlle Croix, the domaine continues to follow organic and biodynamic principles, with minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar.
Located in the Sèvre et Maine appellation, Pépière farms primarily on gabbro, granite, and orthogneiss—each soil type giving rise to site-specific bottlings like Clos des Briords. All wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged on the lees without bâtonnage, preserving the purity and vitality of the Melon de Bourgogne grape.
Clos des Briords is not only a flagship of the domaine but a reference point for Muscadet worldwide—celebrated for its age-worthiness, mineral intensity, and unyielding reflection of place.
