2019 Roagna Barbaresco "Gallina", Piedmont, Italy
Profound and contemplative, the 2019 Barbaresco Gallina from Roagna is a masterclass in site transparency and traditional Nebbiolo expression. Wild strawberry, dried cherry, rose petal, and orange peel emerge on the nose, framed by hints of licorice, savory herbs, and crushed rock. The palate is both powerful and lifted—structured by firm yet polished tannins, luminous acidity, and a long, resonant finish echoing with balsamic notes and spice.

ABOUT THIS WINE
The Gallina vineyard, located in the commune of Neive, is one of Barbaresco’s most prized sites, known for producing wines with generous aromatics and textural depth. Roagna’s parcel sits on limestone and calcareous marl soils, with vines averaging over 50 years of age, all farmed organically with a deep focus on biodiversity and natural balance.
The 2019 vintage saw optimal conditions in Barbaresco—marked by a long, steady growing season and a late harvest that allowed for full phenolic ripeness. True to Roagna’s uncompromising philosophy, the fruit was hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented using only indigenous yeasts. Maceration lasted around 60 days on the skins in large neutral oak fermenters, followed by extended aging in large Slavonian botti for up to five years. No filtration, no fining, no chemical inputs—just an unadulterated expression of place.
The resulting wine is aromatically deep yet finessed, with an earthy elegance and exceptional aging potential. Pair it with classic Piemontese dishes such as tajarin with white truffle, braised veal, or porcini risotto.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Roagna is one of Piedmont’s most revered traditionalists, with a winemaking lineage dating back to the 19th century and a reputation for producing some of the region’s most soulful, long-lived expressions of Nebbiolo. Based in Barbaresco, with additional holdings in Barolo, the family-run estate is led by Luca Roagna, who upholds a rigorous commitment to natural viticulture and extended maceration techniques that capture both the structure and nuance of his crus.
The Roagna vineyards are all managed organically, with an emphasis on deep root systems, biodiversity, and low yields. In the cellar, nothing is rushed—fermentations are slow and natural, extractions gentle, and aging is done exclusively in large neutral oak to avoid masking the wine’s origin.
Roagna wines are benchmarks of purity, ageability, and site fidelity—crafted with a rare patience and restraint that puts them among the finest traditional producers not just in Barbaresco, but in all of Italy.
