2020 Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

Classic and uncompromising, the 2020 Barolo from Giacomo Fenocchio delivers an authentic snapshot of traditional Nebbiolo. Aromas of red cherry, dried rose, tar, and anise emerge with clarity and restraint. The palate is firm and structured, with sinewy tannins, lifted acidity, and earthy undertones that evolve steadily toward a dry, mineral-driven finish. Elegant in its austerity, it’s a wine that speaks fluently of place and time.

ABOUT THIS WINE

Giacomo Fenocchio’s Barolo is a traditional cuvée composed of fruit from several estate vineyards, including parcels in Bussia, Villero, Castellero, and Cannubi—all renowned sites within the Barolo DOCG. The 2020 vintage reflects the estate’s classical approach: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, a 40-day maceration on the skins, and aging for 30 months in large Slavonian oak botti. This hands-off philosophy allows Nebbiolo’s natural structure, perfume, and complexity to shine. The wine is youthful but detailed, showing red berry fruit, dried flowers, spice, and a saline, stony undertone. Best enjoyed with rich Piemontese fare—think veal shank, white truffle dishes, or tajarin with porcini mushrooms—and built to evolve gracefully over 15–20 years.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Founded in 1864, Giacomo Fenocchio is a benchmark producer of traditional Barolo, now helmed by fifth-generation winemaker Claudio Fenocchio. The estate champions long macerations, large oak aging, and organic farming across its holdings in Monforte d’Alba, Castiglione Falletto, and Barolo. With deep roots in the Langhe and a devotion to purity and transparency, Fenocchio produces wines that are unadorned yet profound—built on structure, precision, and a deep respect for terroir. The estate's classic Barolo serves as a reference point for traditionalists seeking wines with soul, longevity, and a direct link to the land.
