2020 Michel Gahier Arbois Rouge Trousseau "Le Clousot", Jura, France

Trousseau is the royal red grape of the Jura, and in Michel Gahier's hands, it makes some beautiful wines. This cuvee exudes fresh juicyness and hints of smokiness. It has good structure, very good length and is quite juicy. A hint of reduction and a trace of trapped carbon dioxide speak to the no-sulfur methodology. Following total de-stemming and a short cold soak, wine ferments spontaneously in neutral oak foudres. Cuvasion lasts 4 weeks. Elevage 18 months in neutral oak foudres. Unfined/Unfiltered. No added SO2.

ABOUT THIS WINE

“Le Clousot” encompasses Michel’s youngest Trousseau vines, and as such it offers perhaps the least concentration but the most lift of his three pure-Trousseau bottlings. A hint of reduction and a trace of trapped carbon dioxide speak to the no-sulfur methodology in play here, and—as with all of Michel’s red wines aerating before serving will bring everything into focus.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

The Gahier family has been resident in the Jura since 1525. The family domaine is 6.5 hectares with the vineyards concentrated in the village of Montigny-les-Arsures, the place recognized as the home of Trousseau. Michel Gahier has learned from the best. Gahier is a neighbor and friend of Jacques Puffeney, both living in Montigny-les-Arsures, a viticultural district that is acknowledged to produce some of the finest wines of the Arbois appellation. His observations and ongoing dialogue with Puffeney have instilled skills and sensibility that produce undeniably outstanding wines that clearly express the very particular terroir of this corner of the Jura.

Gahier harvests and vinifies his wines parcel by parcel. Each wine is ultimately derived exclusively from a single vineyard site. The viticulture is organic (although not “certified”). The wines, both white and red, are aged in old foudres and barrel. The wines are bottled without filtration.
