2020 Pipoli Aglianico del Vulture, Basilicata, Italy
Deeply expressive and structured, the 2020 Pipoli Aglianico del Vulture delivers impressive complexity and finesse from one of Italy’s most ancient winegrowing regions. Aromas of blackberry, violet, black tea, and smoky minerals emerge from the glass with intensity. The palate is bold yet balanced, featuring ripe dark fruit, iron-rich earth, and firm but polished tannins. A backbone of fresh acidity supports a long, savory finish with hints of tobacco and dried herbs.

ABOUT THIS WINE
Produced from 100% Aglianico grown in the volcanic soils of Mount Vulture in Basilicata, the 2020 Pipoli is a striking example of southern Italy’s noble red grape. The region’s high-altitude vineyards—situated at 500–600 meters above sea level—benefit from dramatic day-to-night temperature swings, which preserve acidity and encourage slow, even ripening.
Hand-harvested grapes are destemmed and macerated for up to 20 days to extract color and tannin. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by partial aging in French oak barrels to lend depth and textural refinement without overwhelming the varietal purity. The result is a wine that combines the power of Aglianico with drinkability in its youth—though it can easily age for several more years.
Pipoli Aglianico is a fantastic match for grilled meats, braised beef, aged cheeses, and regional Italian fare like orecchiette with lamb ragù or eggplant parmigiana.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Vigneti del Vulture, producer of the Pipoli line, is a modern project focused on reviving the ancient winegrowing potential of Basilicata, one of Italy’s most underappreciated regions. With vineyards on the slopes of the extinct volcano Monte Vulture, the estate farms at altitude using sustainable practices, relying on local growers and traditional methods.
Their goal is to highlight the terroir and native grapes of this unique region—especially Aglianico, often referred to as the “Barolo of the South” for its structure and longevity. Pipoli is their most accessible line, offering clean, expressive, terroir-driven wines that remain affordable without compromising quality or authenticity.
