2021 Gordo Monastrell, Yecla, Spain

Bold, sun-drenched, and generously fruited, the 2021 Gordo Monastrell captures the raw charm of southeastern Spain. Bursting with ripe black plum, fig, and mocha, it delivers a plush, full-bodied palate framed by supple tannins and a touch of savory spice. Despite its richness, it maintains balance with a thread of freshness and a warm, lingering finish dusted with cocoa and licorice.

ABOUT THE WINE

Sourced from old-vine Monastrell (a.k.a. Mourvèdre) grown in the arid, high-altitude vineyards of Yecla, this bottling reflects the power and ripeness of the region, tempered by cool nighttime temperatures that preserve acidity. The vines, averaging 40–50 years of age, are dry-farmed in rocky limestone soils, resulting in low yields and highly concentrated fruit. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel, followed by aging in a mix of American and French oak barrels for added texture and spice.

This is a wine designed for indulgence—layered, juicy, and easy to love. It pairs perfectly with barbecue ribs, grilled chorizo, rich stews, or anything smoky and bold.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

“Gordo” is a collaboration between winemaker Jorge Ordóñez and the Gil family, two major forces in revitalizing Spain’s old-vine heritage. Focused on showcasing the richness of Monastrell in Yecla, one of Spain’s most underrated DOs, the project is rooted in sustainable vineyard practices and a commitment to preserving historic bush-trained vines. The wines are made to express generosity without sacrificing balance—an ideal entry point for those discovering the depth and character of Spain’s Mediterranean reds.
