2021 Rocca del Principe Irpinia, Campania, Italy

Southern Italy’s most important red grape turns in a classic performance here with ripe black cherry and tangy cranberry fruit, a squeeze of blood orange, a hint of black olive, and firmly grabby tannins that melt away nicely. Excellent companion to cookouts, stews, anything with roasted peppers and black olives.

ABOUT THIS WINE

From the Producer: "Aglianico is the vine that, together with Fiano, represents the peasant culture of our land. This vine has always been cultivated by our ancestors to make a wine which, left to mature in chestnut barrels for 12 months, was then sold in bulk to local traders. One of the most suitable areas of our municipality for the cultivation of this vine is undoubtedly the Campore district, an area located 500 meters away. above sea level whose soil is made up of calcareous clay marl and whose solar exposure is South, south/east. Precisely in this district, as per family tradition, we have planted our Aglianico vineyards, from which we produce our Aglianico Irpinia DOC and our Taurasi Aurelia docg. The grapes are harvested in early November and, after pressing, the must ferments in contact with the skins for about 15 days, followed by aging in barrique for 12 months and in the bottle for 6 months."

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

The company is located in Lapio , a small town on the hills of green Irpinia, the municipality that hosts one of the largest crus in Campania and to which the company has dedicated itself for more than thirty years: the Fiano di Avellino. The territory from a climatic point of view is favored by the presence of the Picentini mountains : one of its peaks, Mount Tuoro (1400 m) is located a very short distance away and acts as a thermoregulator in modulating the heat and accentuating the temperature variations of night and winter. The winery was founded in 2004 (until that date producers of grapes given to others) by will of Ercole Zarrella , his wife Aurelia Fabrizio and his brother Antonio , driven by the common objective of producing exclusively typical wines: Fiano, Aglianico, Taurasi whose DOCG and DOC, unique in their territory, are best expressed in their various declinations. The value and respect for their lands, inherited from their grandparents and parents, is also transmitted to the three daughters of Ercole and Aurelia: Maria Rita Simona and Martina, all dedicated to a specific role in the company.
