2022 Domaine Ostertag "Clos Mathis" Riesling, Alsace, France

A strikingly pure and crystalline expression of Alsace Riesling, the 2022 “Clos Mathis” dances between tension and elegance. Aromas of white peach, lime zest, crushed herbs, and wet stone lead into a taut, linear palate marked by electric acidity and a firm mineral spine. The texture is sleek yet substantial, finishing long and salty, with a delicate echo of citrus pith and jasmine. A wine of precision and quiet intensity, rooted in place.

ABOUT THIS WINE

“Clos Mathis” is a single-vineyard Riesling from the eastern edge of Ribeauvillé, nestled on a cool, granite slope at the base of the Vosges mountains. Originally planted by André Ostertag and named after his son, this 1.2-hectare clos is now fully mature, producing Rieslings of finesse and firm structure. The 2022 vintage offered ideal growing conditions—warm, but not excessive—preserving freshness and aromatic complexity.

Domaine Ostertag has long been a pioneer of biodynamic farming in Alsace (certified since 1998), and “Clos Mathis” reflects this deep engagement with soil life and vine balance. The fruit is hand-harvested, gently pressed, and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel to preserve its purity. Aging continues on fine lees for several months to build texture without compromising energy.

This is a dry Riesling, expressive and age-worthy, with hallmark granitic minerality. It’s a natural pairing for shellfish, sashimi, herbed poultry, or Alsatian classics like choucroute or tarte flambée. Drink now for its verve, or cellar for 8–12 years to reveal further depth and nuance.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine Ostertag is one of Alsace’s most singular and revered estates, founded in 1966 and shaped by the vision of André Ostertag, who revolutionized the region’s approach to terroir expression and biodynamic farming. Based in Epfig, the domaine works across a mosaic of diverse soils, from sandstone to granite, with a philosophy rooted in minimal intervention, respect for life, and artistic freedom.

André's son, Arthur Ostertag, now leads the estate, continuing his father’s legacy with sensitivity and precision. The wines are vinified with care: wild yeasts, gentle pressing, and a tailored approach to each cuvée depending on site and vintage. While many Alsace producers emphasize power, Ostertag's style is about clarity, balance, and finesse. “Clos Mathis” is a perfect example of this ethos—defined more by stone and structure than by fruit alone.
