2022 Domaine Sylvie Esmonin Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy, France
Vibrant, pure, and classically styled, the 2022 Bourgogne Rouge from Sylvie Esmonin delivers more than its humble designation suggests. With aromas of crunchy red cherry, raspberry, wild herbs, and a touch of rose petal, it’s an inviting, energetic Pinot Noir with gentle earthy undertones. The palate is fresh and supple, framed by fine tannins and bright acidity, finishing with lift and clarity. A Bourgogne of substance and charm, marked by its Gevrey roots.

ABOUT THIS WINE
Though labeled as a regional wine, Esmonin’s Bourgogne Rouge punches well above its weight, sourced entirely from vineyards within or directly adjacent to Gevrey-Chambertin. The fruit comes from old-vine Pinot Noir—some over 50 years old—planted on clay-limestone soils with excellent drainage and sun exposure.
Farming is sustainable and lutte raisonnée, with meticulous vineyard care to ensure ripe, balanced fruit. In 2022, a warm and generous vintage, the wine shows an ideal mix of ripeness and freshness. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and depending on the year, partial whole-cluster inclusion may be used to add aromatic lift and structure. The wine is aged in used oak barrels (mostly 1–3 years old), allowing gentle oxygenation without imparting overt wood flavor.
The result is a Bourgogne Rouge that reflects both the vintage and its Gevrey-Chambertin heritage—perfumed, textured, and full of character. It pairs beautifully with roast chicken, mushroom tarts, or charcuterie, and it drinks well now but can evolve gracefully over 3–5 years.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Domaine Sylvie Esmonin, based in Gevrey-Chambertin, is a small but revered estate run by Sylvie Esmonin, who took over from her father Michel in the late 1990s. She is among the few female winemakers in the Côte de Nuits to have gained wide recognition, known for combining traditional Burgundian methods with subtle modern touches.
The estate spans just under 9 hectares, with prized holdings in Gevrey—including the famed Clos Saint-Jacques. Sylvie’s approach is detail-oriented: careful vineyard work, minimal intervention in the cellar, and a preference for whole-cluster fermentation when the vintage allows. Her wines are known for their depth, transparency, and age-worthiness.
This Bourgogne Rouge reflects Sylvie’s ethos of making serious, terroir-expressive wine at every level. It offers a clear window into the spirit of Gevrey-Chambertin—lithe, expressive, and grounded in place.
