2022 Olifantsberg Grenache Noir, Breedekloof, Western Cape, South Africa

An expressive and delicately structured Grenache Noir that champions elegance over power, the 2022 vintage from Olifantsberg is bright, perfumed, and vibrantly mineral. Aromas of wild strawberries, dried rose petals, and white pepper lead into a silky palate layered with red cherry, cranberry, and subtle earth. Light on its feet but deeply complex, with fine tannins and a saline finish that lingers with grace.

ABOUT THIS WINE

Sourced from bush vines rooted in decomposed shale and sandstone soils on the Olifantsberg slopes, the 2022 Grenache Noir is a pure, high-altitude expression of this Mediterranean grape. It opens with a bouquet of wild red berries, dried herbs, rooibos, and floral lift, offering a beautifully transparent window into the site’s cool climate and rocky terrain. On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied with tension, freshness, and layered minerality—more reminiscent of Southern Rhône or Gredos than typical New World Grenache.

Vinification is thoughtful and minimal: the grapes were hand-harvested and 60% whole-bunch fermented with native yeasts in small open-top fermenters. Gentle extraction preserved aromatic purity and structure. The wine was matured for 10 months in a combination of old 500L French oak barrels and concrete, allowing the fruit to shine without overt oak influence. No fining, minimal sulfur, and light filtration ensure purity and texture.

The 2022 vintage is a compelling argument for Grenache as a leading varietal in Breedekloof’s cooler mountain vineyards. Ideal pairings include grilled quail, tomato-based Mediterranean dishes, or roasted vegetables with North African spices.
