2022 Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Rouge "L'Ancestrale", Burgundy, France
A soulful and structured Pinot Noir rooted in deep heritage, “L’Ancestrale” channels the mineral-rich terroir of Marsannay’s limestone slopes with elegant intensity. Aromas of wild blackberry, violets, and forest floor precede a palate of dark cherry, crushed rock, and subtle herbal spice. The texture is taut yet silky, framed by firm acidity and finely-knit tannins, finishing with clarity and persistence.

ABOUT THIS WINE
“L’Ancestrale” is Sylvain Pataille’s homage to the historical heart of Marsannay, crafted from old-vine Pinot Noir planted in one of the appellation’s most revered lieux-dits. These low-yielding, organically farmed vines—many exceeding 70 years of age—are rooted in Kimmeridgian limestone with a high marl content, lending the wine its tension and mineral cut. Whole-cluster fermentation enhances aromatic complexity and structure, while élevage in mostly used oak barrels preserves the purity of fruit and site. The wine is neither fined nor filtered, allowing its vibrant energy and sense of place to shine. On the table, it’s a seamless partner to roast duck, earthy mushroom dishes, or aged Burgundian cheeses.
