2022 ZD Wines "Abacus XXV" Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California, USA
A singular expression of time, terroir, and tradition, Abacus XXV is a masterwork of multi-vintage blending—layered, seamless, and profound. The 25th edition offers an opulent yet graceful profile: ripe black cherry, cassis, and mocha aromas lead into a palate brimming with blackberry liqueur, tobacco, cedar, and spice. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity give the wine extraordinary balance and texture, culminating in a long, harmonious finish with savory complexity and refined power.

ABOUT THIS WINE
Abacus XXV is ZD Wines’ crown jewel and one of the most unique Cabernet Sauvignons in the world. This wine is composed of a solera-style blend of every ZD Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ever produced, beginning with the 1992 vintage through to the 2020 vintage (the most recent at bottling). The base wine for each new edition is the current release of Reserve Cabernet, which is then blended with small amounts of all previous vintages held in barrel.
The resulting wine offers a rare depth and complexity that only age and continuous blending can produce. The 2020 Reserve, which forms the core of Abacus XXV, comes from organically farmed vineyards in Rutherford, St. Helena, and Yountville, and was aged for nearly three years in 100% new American oak before being integrated into the solera blend.
The warm 2020 vintage brought concentration and lush fruit, while the older components provide mature tannins, tertiary notes, and texture, crafting a wine that is simultaneously bold and elegant. Abacus is bottled in limited quantities each year and built for both immediate drinking and extended aging.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
ZD Wines, founded in 1969 by aerospace engineers Norman and Rosa deLeuze, is a family-run Napa Valley estate known for its commitment to sustainability, purity of fruit, and meticulous craftsmanship. Now in its second and third generations of family stewardship, ZD continues to produce wines that reflect both innovation and tradition.
The winery farms all of its estate vineyards organically, with a strong emphasis on environmental stewardship and minimal intervention. ZD’s style favors fruit-driven, rich, and age-worthy wines, crafted with a combination of modern precision and hands-on, small-lot vinification.
The Abacus project, begun in the late 1990s, represents the pinnacle of ZD’s vision—a wine that blends not just vintages but decades of Cabernet Sauvignon excellence. It is a statement of patience, legacy, and artistic blending, making it one of Napa’s most collectible and distinctive wines.
