2023 Domaine de Lucey "Le Sarrasin", Savoie, France

On the nose and palate, “Le Sarrasin” typically delivers lifted aromas of juicy red berries, peppery spice, and a hint of dark cherry, framed by a fine mineral backbone and gentle tannins. It’s fresh and silky, with a medium body and a touch of alpine herbaceousness that lends complexity—ideal for pairing with charcuterie, roasted meats, or even mushroom dishes.

ABOUT THIS WINE

The 2023 Domaine de Lucey “Le Sarrasin" is a vibrant red from Savoie, grown on steep, limestone‑rich slopes around Lucey. Hand‑harvested from roughly 30‑year‑old vines at around 300 m altitude, the grapes undergo natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts before 50 % are macerated for 8 days and the rest for three weeks in stainless steel, with no fining or filtration after aging (85 % stainless, 15 % barrel). The result is an elegant, character‑driven wine with fresh acidity and moderate alcohol (around 11%) that beautifully reflects the rugged terroir and meticulous minimal‑intervention winemaking.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine de Lucey itself is a youthful but thoughtful project founded in 2022 by Erwan Buchwalter, who revitalized the historic Château de Lucey vineyards. The 6.5‑hectare estate, farmed organically since 2013 and certified in 2016, focuses on biodynamic practices and minimal cellar intervention to let terroir and grape shine. Erwan brings expertise from biodynamic viticulture in Alsace, using preparations like nettle and chamomile teas, working soils consciously, and vinifying wines in the ancient fortress without additives. His aim is to craft age-worthy wines that authentically express Lucey’s glacial moraines and Jurassic limestone soils.
