ABOUT THE WINE

The Santenots climat, nestled in the southern part of Meursault near the Volnay border, is one of Burgundy’s most intriguing Premier Cru sites for white wine. Though often planted to Pinot Noir, the Chardonnay vines in this limestone-rich terroir yield wines of remarkable structure and energy. In 2023, a well-balanced growing season brought excellent phenolic ripeness and retention of bright acidity—ideal for producing detailed, age-worthy Chardonnay.

The wine is fermented with native yeasts in French oak barrels, with about 20% new wood used to frame the wine without dominating it. Aging continues on fine lees for roughly 12 months, with minimal bâtonnage, allowing the wine to develop purity, depth, and natural tension. The magnum format further enhances freshness, aromatic integration, and longevity.

In the glass, the 2023 Santenots reveals a cool, mineral spine beneath layered citrus, orchard fruit, toasted almond, and floral tones. There’s lift and drive, yet also density—a Meursault that speaks as much of limestone as it does of richness. The finish is long, mouthwatering, and refined. Serve with butter-poached lobster, roasted chicken with morels, or aged Comté. Cellar-worthy for 10–15 years and beyond in magnum.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Domaine Marquis d’Angerville stands as a pillar of Burgundian tradition and precision. Based in Volnay and family-run since the early 19th century, the domaine has become a benchmark for terroir-expressive, biodynamically farmed wines. Under the thoughtful stewardship of Guillaume d’Angerville, the estate has expanded its white wine program, applying the same meticulous philosophy to Chardonnay as to its famed Pinot Noirs.

Certified biodynamic since 2006, d’Angerville’s approach emphasizes soil vitality, restrained cellar work, and an unwavering focus on purity. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts, sensitive use of oak, and long élevage ensure that each wine is a clear and unadorned reflection of its origin.

The 2023 Meursault “Santenots” in magnum captures this philosophy perfectly: a wine of clarity, structure, and aging potential that offers a serious and soulful take on Meursault. It’s white Burgundy at its most elegant—and in large format, built for the long haul.
